Kafu Banta: Okinawa in One Epic View

⏱️ 2-3 min read

Is Kafu Banta Worth Visiting?

Kafu Banta — Okinawa’s “Happy Cliff” — is one of the most breathtaking ocean overlooks on island.

If Okinawa could be wrapped up into one view, this would be it.

Kafu Banta is located on Miyagi Island — one of the best Okinawa stops for:

  • sunset views
  • ocean overlooks
  • easy-access scenery
  • casual exploring
  • taking visitors who want the “wow” factor without a huge hike

It’s an easy drive from Okinawa main island — across the long bridge, stay left at the Lawson fork (your last conbini stop), and then straight on past the colorful children’s paintings along the sea wall onto Miyagi Island.

Honestly, the drive out there is half the fun.

We usually stop along the bridge pull-off and watch the wind surfers and hover boarders if the tide is right. And we grab snacks and a random drink to try from that Lawson.

Kafu Banta is great to add on if you’re already heading out to the East islands, exploring Uruma / Miyagi Island area — which still feels like a quieter, older version of Okinawa to me.

More traditional homes, fewer hotels, no conbinis, narrower roads, and a little surprises tucked along the way if you’re willing to pull off and explore.

Still on the fence?

Seriously — Sunset or sunshine — your pics from Kafu Banta will have everyone back home saying, ‘you live where again?’ while secretly checking airline fares.

Salty air breeze. Tucked-away beach. The Oki blues everyone raves about running headlong into the horizon.

And at sunset? I’ll just say make sure your phone is charged and has space.

Why Kafu Banta is Worth Visiting

Nothing feels like Okinawa louder than coral rock cliffs, wide-open skies, brilliant blues, tropical plants (just don’t ask me their names), and reef lines weaving through a turquoise sea.

And the blues, I mentioned those right?!

Kafu Banta has this all in one view — plus that natural-beach hair breeze, it’s easy to get to (and park!) and it’s rarely crowded.

It’s so epic, the tour buses stop here too! And if you do end up there with a tour bus?

Just sit on a bench, people-watch for 5 minutes, and you’ll have the view back to yourself — they pass through quickly.

No matter how many times I go, I always get another Okinawa shot I love.

Evening Idyll (seriously, the tropical vibes in that sunset were loud), Paradise Found, and Happy Blues are just to name a few.

Although, I’ll admit that the vibe is very different at high-tide versus low tide.

A quick check of the weather app (like Windy) can help you pick the right time for the view you want to experience.

If you want to get there at sunset, know that the cliff in front of the view has to fall fully into shadow before the scene feels balanced for that epic sunset picture.

Give yourself time to wait for the shadows to move out of the way. (Just keep an eye on the time, parking lots close promptly.)

Oh, did I mention it’s free? Yep.

Same overlook. Same epic Okinawa vibes, every time.

FAQ on Kafu Banta

As someone who takes all our guests there, emphatically yes. Even if it’s a brief stop on your Okinawa itinerary, the pictures do not disappoint.

First off, try to stop when the tide is high for the best views of the ocean blues. Bright sunny days make the ocean pop against the blue sky and the reef lines are easier to se. If you go for sunset, be sure to check the sunset time against the parking lot closing time. (Parking lots close on time.)

Yes! From parking, to walking up to the overlook, to even stopping in the restrooms in the Salt Factory — it’s all free.

Yes, but the best sunsets will be during high tide in my opinion. You’ll want to give yourself enough time for the shadows cast by the cliff you’re standing on to clear and you can get a good shot. But pay attention to the time, the parking lot closes on time.

If you’re doing a quick stop at the overlook, you could spend about 15-30 minutes with plenty of time to pause and take it all in. If you’re meandering through the shop, exploring the salt factory and stopping in the cafe, you could spend 1-1.5 hours at a very easy pace.

Yes, the cliff is securely protected with a 4 ft railing to prevent falling or slipping. The ground is uneven, so running around might be unsafe. There are no playgrounds or parks, but for a quick stop, it’s great spot to get a shot of your child in Okinawa.
